Meet the Governors

Introducing the Governors

The Local Governing Body is made up of a group of people who voluntarily give their time and have an interest in the School and the education provided. They work closely with the Headteacher, (who is also a Governor) and Senior Leadership Team, set the strategic direction for the School and make decisions which ensure that the children get the best possible education. The Governors meet regularly to discuss all matters relating to School. They are kept fully informed, with each member having a specific area of responsibility (each area is listed below for your information). Governors also monitor and evaluate the School’s provision and progress, for example by visiting lessons and looking at SATS results.

The Governors holds Full Governing Body meetings 6 times a year. They discuss school business and matters relating to the Connect Academy Trust, feeding back information to the Trust board through the Clerk. The meetings follow a set agenda that each of the five Academy schools follow; ensuring that the Connect Academy Trust is working together. The five schools making up the Academy are Eggbuckland Vale, Leigham, Widey Court, Thornbury and Manadon Vale.

You will see the Governors around School regularly, including Parent Evenings, "Welcome to" events, the School Fairs and other events through the year. Please see below to meet the members of Manadon Vale's Governing Body.

Ian Mitchell

Hello, I am Ian Mitchell and I am proud to be the Chair of Governors for Manadon Vale. Both of my daughters have benefited from a superb education at Manadon Vale and I feel privileged to be in a position where I can help the school deliver an outstanding education for all our children.

Our school’s vision is for every child ‘to be the best that they can be’. I believe this is really important, but should not be measured in academic terms alone. Our children need to be safe, valued, inspired to learn and most importantly happy. As Governors, we have a responsibility to work with the school leaders to provide the best possible environment to ensure that this happens.

I thoroughly enjoy my role as a Governor and take specific responsibility for Numeracy, Safeguarding and Finance within the school. I welcome contact from everybody in our school community; please contact me via the school office and I will get in touch with you as soon as possible.

Sarah Tawse

Hi, my name is Sarah Tawse and I am a parent governor and also the Vice-Chair. I joined the governing body in May 2014. My sons James and William are at the school.

I decided to become a governor because I wanted to understand and be involved in the experience my children had at school. I'm not an expert in education (my background is in the legal profession) but I am now much more knowledgeable about the education and support that Manadon Vale provides to our children and I get to have a say on some key decisions affecting them.

One of my specific responsibilities is overseeing progress data. I therefore attend regular pupil progress meetings with Mrs Ryder, class teachers and TAs. I also get involved with the Headteachers performance management. So governance is a responsible role, but definitely very rewarding.

Please feel free to chat to me in the playground.

Nigel Lyons

I am a Partner at Foot Anstey Solicitors and deal with a wide range of regulatory and contentious matters. As a Higher Courts (Criminal Proceedings) Advocate, I am able to appear at any level in our Criminal Courts System. I am also a Court and Police Station Duty Solicitor for Plymouth. I am an Associate Governor.

Nicola Jones

My name is Nicola Jones.  I have thoroughly enjoyed being a Governor at Manadon Vale since 2013.  I am the parent of one child at the school and another ex-pupil who has now moved on to secondary school.  I work in the NHS in Plymouth in a management role.

Being part of the Governing Body with others all acting with the best interests of the children, staff and school is definitely time well spent.  In addition to the shared role of Governor, I have a focused role as Governor for the way the school uses Pupil Premium funding and I do my best to actively support the school to, even in small ways, help make Manadon Vale the best it can be!

Jayne Bowen

My name is Jayne Bowen and I am proud to be appointed as a Governor I currently work for the local Authority as an Advisory Teacher for children with additional needs. Prior to this job I specialised in Early Years Teaching in Plymouth for 10 years.  I live in Manadon and I am passionate about giving our local children the best start possible to their education. I will be visiting the School as much as I can to give my support and hope to meet lots of Parents to hear your views.

Sara Orchard

I have been a Governor at Manadon Vale for nearly 6 years; firstly as a Parent Governor and now as a Co-opted Governor.  My involvement with the school goes back quite a while as I am also a former pupil.  It feels as if I have come full circle and I'm now be able to help the school that helped me.  My subject responsibilities are Literacy & Science.

Sarah Neil

I'm a Co-opted Governor who has been associated with the school since 1997.  I was a Parent Governor whilst my children attended Manadon Vale and wanted to continue my role when they left as I firmly believe in the school, the staff and the children.  I am currently the Governor for SEND and a link Governor with Foundation.
