In Year 1, we do expect the children to be independent in toileting and hand washing. Any known medical causes for toileting issues will be passed on to us from Foundation but please let us know if new issues arise. For general accidents, you may be asked to come in and change your child’s clothing.
Please ensure that your child brings their book bag and a clear named bottle with water to school every day. The water bottle needs a sports style or other non-spill cap/lid. As in Foundation, your child can bring a piece of fruit for breaktime and free school fruit will also be available.
Your child can have a school lunch (free for all children in Key Stage 1) or a home packed lunch – PLEASE DO NOT SEND IN ANY NUTS as there are children and staff in school with severe nut allergies. Any particular dietary requirements will be passed on to us from Foundation but please let us know of any recent changes if necessary.
NO RUCKSACKS PLEASE - THERE IS NO SPACE FOR THEM
ONE SMALL KEYRING ONLY AND A CLEAR NAME on the book bag please – again bags will not fit the space with huge key rings. In Year 1, we do not allow the children to bring in any toys/games/cards etc as lost, broken, “swapped” toys can cause many upsets.
PE KIT – In Year 1, our PE sessions are on Wednesday (indoors) and Friday (outdoors). Your child will need to come into school in their PE kit each Monday and Wednesday and wear it for the whole day.
It is therefore very important that the children have the correct PE uniform of:
For PE, we will go outside in cold weather and as your child will be in these clothes all day please ensure they will be warm enough.
PLEASE LABEL ALL UNIFORM INCLUDING PE KIT and check the labels frequently, names do wash off and a lot of time can be wasted trying to sort out unnamed jumpers and cardigans.
Each week your child will bring home 2 reading books for them to read (with your support) and 1 library book (for you to read and share with them). Please leave a note or signature in your child’s reading record whenever they read at home. WITHOUT A NOTE THEIR BOOKS WILL NOT BE CHANGED THAT WEEK.
Spellings will be given most Fridays and will include revision of words from last year, new words based on the phonic sounds they have been learning during the week and harder to read and spell (tricky) words. There will be a spelling test the following Friday.
A maths home learning activity may also be set. This may be something to talk about with your child to “pre-teach” a topic (eg shapes) Or it may be to consolidate and revise a topic already taught in school (eg counting in 5’s)
Continuing from Foundation, the children will still have opportunities to participate in structured play activities which we call Discovery Time. Teaching will take place in small groups every day. Usually, two groups learn with a teacher or teaching assistant and two groups have linked independent learning activities.
