Meet the Governors

Introducing the Governors

The Local Governing Body is made up of a group of people who voluntarily give their time and have an interest in the School and the education provided. They work closely with the Headteacher, (who is also a Governor) and Senior Leadership Team, set the strategic direction for the School and make decisions which ensure that the children get the best possible education. The Governors meet regularly to discuss all matters relating to School. They are kept fully informed, with each member having a specific area of responsibility (each area is listed below for your information). Governors also monitor and evaluate the School’s provision and progress, for example by visiting lessons and looking at SATS results.

The Governors holds Full Governing Body meetings 6 times a year. They discuss school business and matters relating to the Connect Academy Trust, feeding back information to the Trust board through the Clerk. The meetings follow a set agenda that each of the five Academy schools follow; ensuring that the Connect Academy Trust is working together. The five schools making up the Academy are Eggbuckland Vale, Leigham, Widey Court, Thornbury and Manadon Vale.

You will see the Governors around School regularly, including Parent Evenings, "Welcome to" events, the School Fairs and other events through the year. Please see below to meet the members of Manadon Vale's Governing Body.

Sarah Tawse - Chair of Governors

Welcome to the Manadon Vale Primary School Governor page.  My name is Sarah Tawse and I am the Chair and a co-opted governor.  I was previously a parent governor for 6 years as both of my sons are past pupils.

The decision to become a governor at Manadon was driven by my desire to understand more about the education and school experience that my children were receiving.  I also wanted to be better informed about how and why decisions were made and also be a part of that decision making process.  I have no expertise in the education sector (I am a solicitor by profession) but after over six years of involvement in governance, I have a much greater awareness and understanding of how the school is run and how we can support the children to be the best that they can be.

One of my specific areas of responsibility is overseeing the progress that the children make.  I do this by attending termly data meetings with the Head and the staff.  These thorough discussions and data analysis allow me to discuss and evaluate the impact of the teaching for all of the children.

Being a governor is a very interesting and rewarding role, so much so that I have maintained my connection with Manadon Vale even though my children have moved on to Secondary school.  It really is a great place to learn, no matter how old you are!

Nicola Jones

I’m Nicola and have been a governor at Manadon Vale for several years.  I joined as a parent governor and have had two children at the school.
I was keen to join the Governing Body as I wanted to see what I could do, with others, to help continue and support developments at the school for the benefit of the children and this is still the case.  I work for the NHS in Plymouth and I have interests in leadership, management, quality of services, engagement and communication, value for money and, above all working together to help make people’s experiences good.  I would encourage anyone who is interested in finding out how they can support the school to do so - it’s a great thing to do!

Jayne Bowen

My name is Jayne Bowen and I am proud to be appointed as a Governor I currently work for the local Authority as an Advisory Teacher for children with additional needs. Prior to this job I specialised in Early Years Teaching in Plymouth for 10 years.  I live in Manadon and I am passionate about giving our local children the best start possible to their education. I will be visiting the School as much as I can to give my support and hope to meet lots of Parents to hear your views.

Sara Orchard

I have been a Governor at Manadon Vale for nearly 6 years; firstly as a Parent Governor, then as a Co-opted Governor and now as a Staff Governor.  My involvement with the school goes back quite a while as I am also a former pupil.  It feels as if I have come full circle and I'm now be able to help the school that helped me.  My subject responsibilities are Literacy & Science.

Sarah Neil

I'm a Co-opted Governor who has been associated with the school since 1997.  I was a Parent Governor whilst my children attended Manadon Vale and wanted to continue my role when they left as I firmly believe in the school, the staff and the children.  I am currently the Governor for SEND and a link Governor with Foundation.

Sam Bateman

I joined the Governing Body as a parent Governor in September 2020 with a child in year 5 and year 1.  I am really passionate about Mandon Vale and how it shapes my children's future so was keen to be involved in some of the decision making that contributes to that. Although I work as an Executive Assistant in the private sector, I did work within Further Education for 8 years which inspired my interest in the education system. I have experience of Safeguarding and my strengths are in Literacy and the Arts and I feel I can bring this to my role and into the lives of the children at the school.

Lisa Hayward

Hello, my name is Lisa Hayward and I have 3 daughters: twins in Year 4 and one who has recently left for DHSG. We are a military family and moved here in 2014. As a family, MVPS is our third school and definitely the greatest for so many reasons. We are so thankful to all the staff for the engaging lessons and the wide ranging extra curriculum activities available.

Since our first daughter began at MVPS, I wanted to be a school governor and now the opportunity has arisen. It is an extremely exciting time to get involved in all aspects of school life, with my own focus being to concentrate on progress data. Every child has the potential to make a real difference to the world and I look forward to learning about  the progress all MVPS pupils make. I am a secondary school teacher myself and although specialise in geography I have spent most of my teaching career working with pupils with additional needs and covering the core curriculum subjects of English, maths and science. I am therefore looking forward to the challenge of learning more about behind the scenes in a primary school.

Hannah Greenwood

I am delighted to have joined the governing body in September 2020 as a Parent Governor. I have two children at the school, one who is in Year 4 and one who has just started in Foundation. I have also been all the way through the school with my eldest son, who is now in his first year of secondary school.

I am a huge advocate of Manadon Vale, and genuinely believe my children’s education and well being is at the centre of how the school is run.  I feel really passionate about being a parent governor, as it enables me to understand the school in greater depth, as well as having an opportunity to contribute to how decisions will affect, not just my children, but yours too. I am here to represent your voice and views, so please do not hesitate to come and find me in the playground (I’m usually somewhere in the middle!).

Jody Gerry

I am a community governor, joining in Sept 2020, I am also a Manadon parent with children in year 2 and year 4. I was keen to be involved in the future development of the school in terms of education, physical and mental health of the children and Manadon team. I work for the NHS at the REI Derriford as a specialist optometrist as well as within the community. I promote the importance of vision, and work with the school screening team for the foundation years with the aim of providing excellent eyesight for education. My specialist areas are science and maths as well as promoting STEM.

Hayley Morton

Hello! I'm Hayley with a child in year 1. Curious by nature, I was intrigued by the decision making processes and daily running of the school, so when the opportunity to join the governing body as a parent governor arose, I took it!

My experience of MVPS so far has been extremely positive, and as such, was my main motivation for wanting to be involved with our children's school. The school has a great reputation within the community, and I'm excited to be a part of a brilliant team and helping uphold that reputation.

I'm excited to be part of our children's journey at a school where the pupils are always at the heart.
