About this curriculum

Learning a foreign language can open doors to a rich cultural world and enhance one's global communication skills and at Manadon Vale, all pupils will be expected to achieve their full potential. The four key language learning skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing will be taught and all necessary grammar will be covered in an age-appropriate way across KS2. This will enable pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning.

Aims of French at Manadon Vale

Through our teaching of Languages at Manadon Vale, we aim to:

  • Ensure every child has the opportunity throughout Key Stage 2, to study a foreign language and develop their interest in the culture of other nations
  • Ensure pupils’ learning is enriched in a broad curriculum to which languages contribute
  • Provide language teaching informed by the 5 ECM outcomes – Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing and Cultural Understanding
  • Ensure pupils have access to high quality teaching and learning opportunities, through the use of EuroStars

Why we learn languages at Manadon Vale

Reasons for learning languages:

  • recent studies show a positive correlation between second language learning and academic achievement (Steele et al, (2015)
  • language learners develop the ability to communicate with greater self-awareness and confidence
  • learning a new language at a young age can provide children with strategies to help them learn other languages in the future
  • gives us significant transferable skills, as it reinforces our linguistic competence and the use of grammar and syntax
  • can help children develop good memory skills, along with decoding and analytical skills
  • learning a language is challenging; children develop their resilience
  • leads to a measurable improvement in our attention capacity (Vega-Mendoza et al, 2015, Cognition)
  • helps to develop our awareness and understanding of different cultures: young people need to become culturally agile, ready for the mobile and global jobs of the future

🎲 Dungeons and Dragons - Act 3 Our group of adventurers stocked up on supplies and a few interesting spell scrolls from a small, failing buisness. After snacking on some questionable bread rolls and meat products, the party headed towards Tharley's farm to investigate the disappearing sheep and mysterious goings on. The party discovered a rather terrified Tharley who had locked himself in his home ... he soon became too overwhelmed and shut the door in our heroes faces. Navi used a Scroll of Animal Speaking and suddenly ... one of Tharley's sheep began to make sense - introducing the extremely impressive, rather magnificent and definitely-a-wizard-not-a-sorcerer-there's-a-DIFFERENCE NAVI - the one and only Zephyrus. Something baaaaaaaa'd this way comes ... 🐑

In Foundation Stage we have been learning about Ramadan and why it is important to some Muslims. It is a time to reflect on being the best person you can be, like being kind and thoughtful. A time to be thankful and to help others. Ramadan begins with the sighting of a new crescent moon. We have been making sun catchers in the shape of lanterns. the lantern represents light guiding the way and in some countries, it is traditional to illuminate the streets at night during the holy month of Ramadan.

🎲 Dungeons and Dragons - Scene 2 The spotlight was on The High Society this afternoon; the guild had ventured into the woods three days prior after investigating the strange occurrences at Yellowdale ... but so far, they have found no evidence of mischief. That was until they awoke around their campfire to find a member of their party missing! The Society decided to follow Nisha's footprints and head west - after tracking her steps (and licking some sticks - who knew survival skills could be so entertaining?), Infernus made some keen observations and noticed that they were all being watched. Nisha suddenly started shouting for help! The group quickly dashed through the woodlands and discovered that Nisha had rather foolishly fallen down a trap; sensibly, the society remembered they had rope in their satchel and heaved Nisha to freedom. They are still being watched ... 🤯

YEAR 5 PARENTS/CARERS Swimming starts on Monday. Children should wear PE kit on Mondays and normal school uniform (without a tie) on the other days. However, children will not be in trouble if they accidentally wear PE kit on the wrong day - it is a busy few weeks. Have a great weekend and see you on Monday.
