About this curriculum

The variety of topics covered in PSHE lessons include relationships & sex education, money, personal health, social issues and drug awareness – providing children with vital information to live a healthy life. At Manadon, we feel that an awareness of these topics is crucial to provide children with an understanding of the world we live in and how they can stay safe.

Our staff feel it is important that resilience, confidence and independence are highlighted as attributes that should be developed in our pupils. Moreover, their skill and professionalism enables them to select a wide range of appropriate resources to support and encourage all learners.

As a school, we are inclusive and support many different charities throughout the year, with children participating in a huge range of fund raising activities.

Furthermore, upper key stage 2 are encouraged to explore wider life issues in preparation for secondary school and beyond. Indeed, we feel proud that through our PSHE curriculum and the ethos of Mrs Gilbride and the whole school team, our children at Manadon leave us as kind, discerning, confident and well-balanced individuals.

3H had lots of messy fun this afternoon in Art, using paper mache to create the base for their 'seawig' inspired hat linked to our English text Oliver and the Seawigs. They are looking forward to decorating these next week.

English Reading Incentive Update- Summer term 2024. 📚 📖 🤓 Dear parents/carers, Just a quick message to inform you of a slight change regarding the whole school reading incentive. Previously, children won a raffle ticket when they passed a quiz in the top half of their ZPD score. After receiving feedback from staff and children and to make it fairer for children who read longer and higher-level books, children now receive a raffle ticket for every 3 points they receive as long as they have passed the quiz (you will find the number of points on the label on the inside of the book cover). For example, a longer book may take a child 2-3 weeks to complete but they may receive 18 points which would give them 6 tickets. Whereas reading 3 shorter books a week may give you 6 points in total, resulting in 2 tickets. For EYFS and children who are not on the Accelerated Reader programme, class teachers will now be giving each child a raffle ticket if they read 3 times a week at home. Thank you again to the Manadon Vale PTFA who are funding this incentive until the end of this year. Thank you, Miss Harris. Year 6 teacher and English lead.

Just before the Easter break, Miss Harris carried out the raffle assembly for the whole school reading incentive. The children in this photo won a variety of prizes including lunch with the headteacher with a friend, skip the dinner queue for a week, extra play, chocolate and three children won a trip to Waterstones with Miss Harris to select their own book and enjoy a hot chocolate- funded by the Manadon Vale PTFA! A letter went home for these three winners today. 📚💙😁 Keep up the reading MVPS! This incentive was such a success that it is running again this summer term.

This year’s event is finally upon us! The children are really looking forward to their run. We will be meeting outside the Hoe Bowling Club (Armada Way, just up past the Crowne Plaza). The children will need to be dropped off here at 10:45 am. Here the children will be registered by staff and pose for pre-race pictures. All the children and staff will leave the meeting point at 11:00 am and walk to the Schools’ Challenge Holding Area. We cannot wait at the meeting point for anyone who is late. There are over 3,000 children taking part this year and all schools must be signed in and at their designated position by 11:30 am. The organisers are very clear in that late arrivals will be denied entrance. Please consider the inevitable traffic delays, road closures and parking difficulties when deciding on a leaving time to arrive at the meeting point. Please ensure that your child has appropriate clothing and footwear according to the weather. The Schools’ Challenge T-shirt must be worn, and their race number must be displayed clearly on the front. Please ensure that on the reverse of the number, all the necessary information has been completed before arriving at the meeting point. If your child is asthmatic and requires using an inhaler, he or she must have it on them. If not, they will not be able to take part as of the rules and regulations set by the race organisers. The Schools’ Challenge race will start at approximately 12:00 pm. Please Note - Only children and registered staff are allowed inside of the School’s Challenge Area. Spectators are welcome to cheer on the children from designated viewing points on the Hoe. After the event, all children and staff will return to the original meeting point for collection at approximately 12:30 pm.

In computing this week, 3H used an online database tool to create a branching database linked to minibeasts. They worked with collaboration and resilience and should be proud of their results. Well done 3H!

We had the fantastic author, Talula Grey, visit Manadon today. She spent some time with all of Foundation and Key Stage One, sharing her joy and excitement of reading and storytelling. There was also the opportunity for her to work with our military children families in Key Stage 2, discussing some of the unique challenges they face and how reading can provide comfort and understanding.
